The Christchurch earthquakes caused significant damage at St Andrews College. Two boarding houses had to be demolished, forcing boarders into motels, and the development of this new boarding facility to a tight programme. The new building accommodates 120 boarders in a variety of room types. Tutor flats are situated on each level in separately articulated lean-to’s. Common rooms, lined with ash veneered panels and exposed LVL rafters, look out onto landscaped courts. Smaller day lounges look across to the College through cedar veiled balconies. The exterior features dark acid etched concrete panels, pre-weathered zinc, terracotta tile and plaster, reflecting a common palette of materials used elsewhere across the campus.
